Course Description:

The 2-D/Studio Art course, is a course offering for the serious art student interested in building a mastery level, complete portfolio that is ready for submission to the following places; The National Scholastic Art Competition, Colleges and Universities. This course promotes a sustained investigation of all three aspects of portfolio development; quality, variety and concentration.

-A large part of this course is the development of a body of work for the Concentration section of the portfolio that reflects an individually developed Artists Statement .

-This course will emphasizes making art as an ongoing process that involves the student in informed and critical decision making.

-This course will include group and individual student critiques and instructional conversations with the teacher, enabling students to learn to analyze and discuss their own artworks and those of their peers.

-This course will teach students to understand artistic integrity as well as what constitutes plagiarism. If students produce work that makes use of photographs, published images, and/or other artists' works, the course teaches students how to develop their own work so that it moves beyond duplication.

Week One 2-D: Discuss and evaluate current portfolio and identify weakness and needs and research.

Week One Studio:  Develop Artists statement and work towards identifying Style, Theme and Strength.

This week students will work on their first Concentration piece of their portfolios.  This work should represent a mastery level medium for each student and will give them a chance to work in a theme based on their choice.

9/3

Students must finish their first Concentration project this week.  They will begin their large scale graphite portrait next week so we will begin to practice using the appropriate values this week.

9/13

Students are beginning their portrait this week.  They will learn gridding techniques and match the appropriate value to their reference photos.  Working large scale for the first time, they will pay close attention to detail and texture within their portraits.

This week 2-D Students are finishing up their portraits and will begin working towards another portfolio piece to add to their Breadth or Variety portion.  Senior Studio artists are working on their 2nd Concentration portion of their portfolio.

Several students have finished up their portrait projects and have moved onto their portfolio pieces.  They will add to their breadth by creating a project that aligns with their mastery level medium.

Later this week we will be introduced to the Charcoal Eye Project.  This project will serve as a way to build on Charcoal Techniques by creating a detailed drawing with a loose medium.  Several processes will be demonstrated for them to work on.

Students will explore Charcoal and how to properly PULL the medium much like a paint palette.  Most of these students do not have much background using this loose medium.

12/2

Students are about midway through the Charcoal Eye project.  All 2-D and most Senior Studio students are working on this project.  We are looking for purposeful and smooth application of the medium to create a skin-like texture showing the tooth of the paper.

Students will participate in a group critique during finals.  This peer led critique will focus on their choice of concentration within their portfolio.

Students in Studio Art/2-D are beginning to work on Theme based work.  Students will have 8 themes to choose from and they will work to develop their own project based on cumulative knowledge.  They will need to plan the size, medium and color scheme for each project.  The order of themes is up to them as long as they choose from the 8 listed.

Feb. 18

Students are nearly complete with their 2nd Theme based project.  These themes are available on my Pinterest page and they may work in any order.  Students will be planning each project based on their chosen theme.  They will need to plan which medium and style they will use.

Students will begin project 3 this week based on one of the 8 themes presented.  They must use a theme and create their own project by planning their size, medium and style.  Students will begin a large scale painting next week based on the work of Chuck Close.
