Week One

This week students will be working on drawing the parts that make up a portrait.  Ears, Noses, Mouths and Eyes.  Students will be asked to draw 8-10 of each on their Gridded Template focusing on variety and creating dimension.

This week we will be finishing all of the facial features and beginning to learn the proportions and spacing of those features on the human head.  We will use our previous studies to assemble several full faces.

Students that have finished their full faces will begin to plan their next project which will be a Surreal Portrait.  Students must assemble a portrait at least 12" tall from Chin to the top of the head.  In addition, they will add a surreal element to their portraits and will have the option to use color.

Portrait Progression and Shading Examples

Set the Eyes back in the skull by giving proper Value around the eye.  This will give the impression of the socket of the eye.

Notice how the white of the eyes is not white at all.  Remember it is a sphere and should be shaded appropriately based on the direction of the light source.

The Nose has several undulations and the ball of the nose is typically the highest point catching the most light.

I have started adding DEEP DARKS with a 6B pencil.  Sometimes it just takes a little bit of that to make things in front of it begin to POP out and create better depth and dimension.

Feb. 18th

Students will begin planning their Painting on an Alternative Canvas.  This project will be on display around the school.  Students will choose a theme and an area to display their work that will represent PLHS.  Each student will be given a styrofoam head and will learn to create Rhythm and Movement as they paint in the round.

Students have started painting on their Head Project.  Most have submitted their contract worth 25pts.  If they have completed their design in color and received a signature from the host teacher, they will receive those points.  Next, students will begin laying down their base layer and adding their design to that layer.
